107 persons killed in motor vehicle crashes so far this year

A staggering 107 persons have been killed in 94 fatal crashes since the start of the year, the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport and Mining is reporting.

This represents a four per cent decrease in fatalities, as a total of 111 persons were killed in 103 fatal crashes over the corresponding period in 2017.

This is while the unit is reporting that no road deaths have been recorded in three police divisions since January 1. These divisions are Kingston Western, Kingston Central and St Thomas.

A breakdown of the figures shows that St Catherine led all the parishes, with its two police divisions reporting a total of 26 road fatalities.

St Andrew is next, as the three police divisions there reported a total of 17 road deaths.

Four children have died in motor vehicles crashes this year, down from six for the corresponding period last year, while 14 elderly persons were killed, one more than for the same period last year.
