93 held by police in West Kingston operation

Police flooded sections of West Kingston on Thursday, taking 93 persons in custody for questioning in connection with a number of crimes that have been committed in the community recently.

“The 93 persons were apprehended during a series of operations,” Superintendent Howard Chambers, head of the Kingston Western police division, told Loop News.

According to Chambers, during the operation, a man was shot and injured when he engaged lawmen in a shootout in the Chestnut Lane area.  A 9mm pistol was recovered during the standoff.

Lawmen flooded West Kingston on Thursday after two vendors were shot and killed at the Coronation Market.

“Police were carrying out a search in the area when they saw one man acting in a suspicious manner,” Superintendent Chambers said.

“As the team of officers approached, the man he pulled a firearm and opened fire at members of the police team,” he said.

The injured man has been admitted in hospital under police guard.

The development comes hours after two vendors were shot dead, and a third person injured, at the Coronation Market, which is located in the area.

Reports are that about 10:00 pm, gunmen went to the market and opened fire on a group of vendors who were packing up their goods.

When the shooting subsided, three persons were found suffering from gunshot wounds including 54-year-old Sonia Bennett and Dane McDonald, 34.

They were rushed to hospital where Bennett and McDonald were pronounced dead.
