Two St Ann cops arrested on corruption charges

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two policemen were today (July 29) arrested and charged by the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, following a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

They cops are both assigned to the St Ann’s Bay Police Station.

Reports are that on Monday June 9, the two were among a group of four officers patrolling the Discovery Bay main road when they searched four men who were sitting in a parked motor car along the roadway.

One of the men was found with $350,000 in his possession and the officers allegedly accused them of being scammers then proceeded to solicit $200,000 to not arrest them.

When their demands were not met, it is alleged that the accused officers forcibly took $200,000 and left the scene.

A report was later made to the ACB and an investigation launched.

The cops were subsequently placed before the St Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court, where one was offered bail in the sum of $150,000 and the other in sum of $300,000. They are to also surrender all travel documents.

Both men are scheduled to re-appear in court on Friday October 3.
