FIVE acts, including last year’s winner Exco Levi, have been nominated for Best Reggae Recording of the Year at Canada’s Juno Awards, scheduled to be held March 29 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg.
The Juno is Canada’s version of the Grammy Awards.
The Manchester-born, Toronto-based Exco Levi (given name Wayne Ford Levi) has won the category for the past two years.
He seeks the hat-trick with Strive, a song produced by German duo Silly Walks Discotheque on their popular Honey Pot ‘riddim’.
St Elizabeth-born singer Akustix gets a nod for Independent Mandela, an ode to South African icon Nelson Mandela who died in December.
Akustix is also a longtime Toronto resident.
Singers Ammoye (for Baby It’s You), Dru (for Effortless) and Dubmatix (Renegade) complete the list of nominees.
Last year, deejay Exco Levi won his second straight Juno Award for Reggae Recording of the Year with the song Storms of Life.
His prior win came for the controversial song Bleaching Shop, produced by Donovan Germain’s Penthouse Records.
