Feared Alma Gang leader shot dead

BIG BRIDGE, Westmoreland — The reputed leader of the feared Alma Gang, 29-year-old Torneal Haughton, also called ‘Malta’, was shot and killed during a reported shoot-out with the police here yesterday afternoon.

According to the police, about 1:00 pm, members of the constabulary went to a premises where they spotted Haughton, whom they said immediately opened fire at them. A gun battle reportedly ensued and the gang leader was shot and killed.

Police said a .45 Colt pistol was recovered from the dead man.

Haughton, who resided at the Alma community in the parish, headed the Westmoreland police’s most wanted list.

He was accused of murdering two women whose bodies were dumped in a cave in 2008. He was held but absconded bail and had been on the run since.

The police reported that the Haughton-led Alma Gang was responsible for a number of murders committed in the parish.

In addition to yesterday’s demise of Haughton, police said six other members of the gang were shot and killed in security operations since October, while a number of illegal guns, including high-powered weapons, have been recovered.
