Gym apologises for ‘fat pig’ ad

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Local gym Gymkhana Fitness has issued an apology after receiving a flurry of negative comments regarding its press advertisement published on Monday.

The ad, which featured a pig in a carnival costume, with the words “Pork looks good on tables, burn it off. Get in shape for Carnival” angered users on social networking sites.

In a release on twitter and Facebook Tuesday afternoon Gymkhana said: “We heard, and we sincerely apologize. We have been listening…and acknowledge our error in judgement. Yesterday we placed an advert in the Jamaica Observer which has received a lot of feedback.

The message of the advert, though never the intention, has triggered a lot of conversation, emotion, notes of insensitivity, and to many, a negative takeaway.

We’ve heard you, and recognise that our error in judgement was not intended to point to any particular demographics or to imply same. We’re listening to you and commit to you that we have pulled the advert in all its forms.

We sincerely and wholeheartedly apologise to all, Thank you to everyone for keeping us on our toes.”

During conversations with their twitter followers, the gym said that they plan to also release the apology in print.
