50 most violent cities in the world: Where does Jamaica rank?

Kingston is the only Caribbean city named among the 50 most violent cities in the world in an annual ranking published by the Mexico Citizens Council for Public Security.

With reported stories of people found hacked apart, heads cut off and paraded on mop sticks, others skinned alive, and the slaughtering of people travelling on public buses, it is no surprise that Latin America has the undesirable label of being the most violent region in the world.

Forty-one Latin American cities made the list. The council notes that the majority of violence in these cities are as a direct result of, “drug trafficking, gang wars, political instability, corruption and the deregulation of economies which has facilitated widespread poverty”.

In terms of non-Latin American cities, Kingston joins four cities each from the US and South Africa.

Interestingly the council’s ranking does not take into consideration combat zones, cities with unavailable data or cities with populations of less than 300,000 – So some dangerous cities may not be represented on the list.
