It arrived belatedly, in fact nine months late, but Jamaica’s Ambassador Anthony Hylton is not complaining.
Last Wednesday, the former foreign minister and minister of industry, investment and commerce finally received his long-awaited medal for lifetime achievement from former United States President Barack Obama in the area of voluntary work.
Obama announced the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Hylton in January this year — before demitting office to President Donald Trump — for providing hundreds of hours of free legal service to Jamaicans through the Joseph Assignment Global Initiative, a US organisation.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards programme in the US. It encourages individuals to live a life of service.
The Joseph Assignment has been providing interventions in health, education, and skills training in communities across Jamaica for over 10 years. The organisation also does volunteer service in many communities across the African continent.
The Obama medal was presented to Ambassador Hylton at the law firm of Samuda & Johnson where he is a partner.
