The police have charged a businessman following the late-night shooting death of a man who visited his babymother after they had retired to bed.
The businessman, 45-year-old Robert Russell, is from Olive Park, Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth, and the incident occurred in Burnt Ground district, also in the parish.
The police on Wednesday said that, following a “comprehensive investigation”, the businessman was charged with murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Orlando Blake. The incident occurred on October 1.
Reports are that on September 30, about 10:20pm, Russell visited a woman with whom he shares a child, and they retired to bed.
Sometime after, Blake reportedly went to the house to visit the woman.
Blake entered the house and was shot by Russell, who was armed with his licensed firearm. The police were summoned, and he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Russell was immediately taken into custody, and his firearm seized. He was charged yesterday.
The police said his court date is being finalised.
In the meantime, head of the St Elizabeth Police Division, Acting Superintendent Coleridge Minto, reminding residents that there is a rule of law and to allow the justice system to take its course.
He raised the issue, noting that following the shooting, the car belonging to a key witness was burnt, and there have also been reports of threats circulating.
