CAPI welcomes Tivoli Commission of Enquiry, urges politicians to resist temptation

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Civil lobby group Citizens Action for Principles and Integrity (CAPI) late Monday welcomed the appointment of the three commissioners to preside over the enquiry into the Tivoli incursion in May 2010, describing the appointments as a “seemingly product of serious and careful thought”.

CAPI also implored all political interests to “resist any temptation to vulgarly exploit the Commission of Enquiry for cheap political gain, as this will only result in another incursion on the rights and interests of the people of Tivoli who rightly deserve an independent hearing and closure in this unfortunate affair”.

According to CAPI co-convenor Dennis Meadows, there is “no doubt the appointment of Chairman Sir David Simmons, Justice Hazel Harris and Velma Hylton, will engender confidence in the process as their unblemished antecedence, impenetrable integrity and professionalism will facilitate the level of independence required to investigate such a politically charged issue”.

“As it relates to the Terms of Reference for the Commission of Enquiry, we believe it adequately covers the areas of concern and will glean the necessary findings which we hope will facilitate closure to this unfortunate occurrence in the country’s history,” a release from CAPI said.

“We however believe that Term of Reference should be amended to cause the commissioners to make recommendations as it relates to compensation to the victims of the incursion, if warranted.”
