LIAT cancels flights as Tropical Storm Gonzalo approaches

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Regional airline LIAT has announced the cancellation of some flights scheduled for tomorrow, Monday 13th October, as it prepares for the impact likely to be felt by the passage of Tropical Storm Gonzalo.

LIAT, in a statement Sunday evening, said that the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua will be closed from 10:30 pm until 12:00 noon on Monday, when the situation will be reviewed.

Passengers travelling on Monday are being urged to check the LIAT website, the LIAT Facebook page, their local LIAT office, or call the LIAT Call Centre from Antigua – 1-268-480-5582; toll free from the rest of the Caribbean – 1-888-844-5428 and from Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands – 1-866-549-5428 for information on the status of their flights.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo formed east of the Lesser Antilles early Sunday afternoon

At 4:00 pm Sunday the centre of Tropical Storm Gonzalo was located near latitude 16.4 degrees north and longitude 59.5 degrees west or about 205 kilometres east of Guadeloupe, according to the Meteorological (Met) Service of Jamaica.

Gonzalo is moving towards the west near 19 kilometres per hour and this motion is expected to continue through Monday followed by a turn towards the west-northwest on Monday night. On the forecast track, the centre of Gonzalo is expected to move through the central Leeward Islands by early Monday and approach the Virgin Islands on Monday night, the Met Service said.
