Man smuggles ganja to pay bills, sentenced

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A man who told the court that he smuggled ganja to pay off some of his bills was fined and confined when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court recently.

Dave Brown pleaded guilty to possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, taking steps to export ganja, and conspiracy.

Brown was reportedly stopped and searched while attempting to board a flight to Curacao.

He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he expelled 19 pellets of ganja, which weighed one pound four ounces.

“Why I should not send you to prison?” Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey asked.

“I have my daughter out there doing some exams, that is why I did what I did to pay off some bills,” he replied.

He was subsequently fined J$2,000 or six months for possession of ganja, J$4,000 or six months for dealing in ganja, J$8,000 and nine months for taking steps to export ganja, and nine months for conspiracy, which will run concurrently.
