KINGSTON, Jamaica – A video has surfaced showing a man, said to be Oneil Thorpe, who was fatally shot by the police on Sunday in Riverton City. In the video he is brandishing and describing two firearms.
The police said 35-year-old Thorpe, of Ferguson Drive in the area, was shot during a confrontation with them. They also said a .45 Berretta with three rounds of ammunition was recovered in the area.
Senior Superintendent of Police Richard Stewart told OBSERVER ONLINE that the video was taken from Thorpe’s phone and is being released to illustrate the character of the individual residents are defending.
Residents on Monday gathered on Spanish Town Road in Kingston to protest against what they said was an extrajudicial killing by the lawmen.
According to residents, Thorpe was at a dance being held a short distance from his home when police surrounded the area. Thorpe, the residents claimed, was called by police officers who forced him around a corner, after which a number of shots were heard.
He was allegedly found with his mouth gagged and bullet wounds to his chest.
The Independent Commissions of Investigations (INDECOM), said it is investigating the incident.
