Another JUTC employee shot dead, company shocked

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has expressed sadness at the shooting death of one of its employees in Spanish Town, St Catherine, this afternoon.

He has been identified as Donovan Nugent, bus cleaner and janitor at the State-run entity.

Nugent is the second bus cleaner employed to the company to be killed. In 2015, 30-year-old Marvin McLeary was found dead on King Street in the parish.

Preliminary reports are that about 4:00 pm, Nugent was approached by an armed man at the Spanish Town bus park who opened gunfire hitting him. He reportedly died at the scene.

Kirk Finnikin, deputy managing director in charge of Operations at the JUTC, said Nugent’s killing was a blow for the company.

“No one could have seen this coming and the loss is a great one for us and we expect even more so for Mr Nugent’s relatives, to whom we extend our sincere condolences,” Finnikin said.

Nugent, who was 35 years old, was attached to the JUTC’s Spanish Town Depot.

Nugent has been employed to the company since 2014.

The Spanish Town police are investigating the incident.
