ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, May 28, CMC – The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) says nearly 200 Grenadians had been deported from several countries overseas over five years, with the highest number coming from the United Kingdom.
According to the figures released by the RGPF for the period 2020 to 2024, a total of 197 nationals were returned to the island as deportees.
The data shows that there were 143 males and 54 females, with some of them falling within the low age group of zero to 18, otherwise called minors and the high age group 60 plus otherwise called senior citizens.
The data showed that most of the deportees, 61, were deported from the UK while there were 41 from the United States and 16 from Canada.
Within the region, there were 43 deportees from Trinidad and Tobago, 20 from St Vincent and the Grenadines, three from Barbados, two from the French territory of Martinique and one each from Sweden, Aruba, St Lucia and St Maartin.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) in its annual report noted that for the period 2019 to 2024, a total of 40 Grenadians were deported from the North American country.
Grenadian officials expect the figure to increase as the Donald Trump administration undertakes its mass deportation initiative.
Earlier this year, Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Andall, confirmed that the island had been officially informed that several Grenadians were scheduled for deportation.
“We did get communication from them towards the end of January that they will probably be repatriating or deporting Grenadian citizens. They also spoke about the consequences of countries not wanting to receive their nationals.
“Grenada is home to all Grenadians, and we are prepared and ready to welcome back any Grenadian who is repatriated, regardless of their circumstances. Of course, there may be some with a particular background that you may have to give particular attention to, but we have every intention of accepting bona fide Grenadians who are repatriated from whatever country,” he added.
Andall said that it’s not unusual for Grenada to receive deportees from the diaspora, adding “there is nothing new about that from the United States, if you look at the records you will see a couple of hundreds of people have been repatriated from the US, Canada and the UK without any fanfare”.
