Jamaican student-athlete dies in US car crash

AJamaican student-athlete died as a result of injuries he sustained in a car crash in Douglas, Wyoming in the United States on Monday.

Nathan Reid, 22, was a shot put and discus thrower at the University of Wyoming (UW), where he was majoring in mechanical engineering.

The Jamaican, who is a past student of Cornwall College in St James, is the son of Supreme Court judge Icolin Reid and attorney Dalton Reid.

According to a statement from UW, Nathan died in what appeared to be a “single-vehicle accident” on US Highway 18/20 near Orin Junction and south of Douglas, Wyoming.

Not much information was provided on the crash or the exact time it occurred.

It is suspected, however, that Nathan’s vehicle was travelling westbound on US Highway 18/20 about five miles east of I-25 near Orin Junction, UW stated.

The Jamaican was discovered at the scene of the crash by construction workers early Monday morning. He was pronounced dead sometime later.

Nathan, according to his profile on the World Athletics website, had outdoor personal bests of 16.06 metres and 55.59 metres in the shot put and discus throws, respectively.

Both throws were recorded in 2022, the same year that Nathan earned an All-America honour when he placed 23rd in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Nathan was entering his senior season at UW in the fall of 2023, the university stated.

“Anytime you lose someone in the UW family it hurts, but it is extremely sad when the individual is a UW student,” said University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman, in the release.

“Nathan had a bright future, and he was so well respected by his teammates and coaches. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, teammates and friends,” he stated.

Counselling is being provided for UW’s student-athletes and staff members.

Meanwhile, tributes have been pouring in across social media for young Nathan.

“Rest in peace, my Jamaican brother. I am so glad to have been the first friend you had in Laramie (in Wyoming) and part of your story,” said a woman who left a comment on his Instagram page.

“Can’t believe mi bru is gone,” shared another Instagram user.

Added another user: “So sad Nathan is gone like this. My condolences to Dalton and Icolin (Nathan’s parents).”

Some members of the local legal fraternity are aware of the tragedy and have also been expressing their condolences to the family of the young man.
