Mayor Wants Stiffer Penalties To Reduce Violent Attachs On Children

Angela Brown Burke – Mayor of Kingston

Kingston’s Mayor, Angela Brown Burke, has joined those raising concern about the spate of  violent attacks against children.

Addressing the International Women’s Day Expo at the University of  the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus on Saturday, she pointed to a trend where young girls are turning to men for financial assistance.

She cited last month’s murder of  Frome Technical High School student Santoya Campbell.

“And I believe part of it is a result of the hardship and economic times that we are in . It’s the older men preying on the young girls…. my call to all of us is “what can we do”……”

The Mayor is calling for stiffer penalties to reduce violent attacks on children.

“I believe that the answer we must search for is one that prevents it from happening in the first place…what does life mean to you, how do you resolve your differences? How do we build a culture of mediation and inclusiveness? she added.
