PNP wants reasons for Ruel Reid’s resignation made public

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Leader of the People’s National Party (PNP) Peter Phillips is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to immediately disclose his reasons for firing Ruel Reid from his Cabinet.

Phillips was, a short while ago, reacting to news of the education minister’s resignation from the ministry and the Senate.

Holness disclosed this morning that he met with Reid regarding certain allegations in the public domain and in keeping with the principles of good governance requested that he submit a resignation letter which was subsequently received.

Phillips suggested that the firing just two days after the Opposition called for the Auditor General to launch an investigation into allegations of corruption at the education ministry and some of its agencies, suggests that the prime minister was already aware of the matter.

Holness in his statement said the education ministry will now fall under the temporary supervision of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) which will start its own review.
