KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police are reporting the seizure of 24 illegal firearms and 2242 rounds of ammunition over a six-day period as they “intensify efforts to crack down on organised criminal gangs”.
According to the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) the weapons were seized between Sunday, May 25 and Saturday, May 31, bringing the total number of firearms seized since the start of the year to 274, while 5659 rounds of ammunition have been seized.
The CCU said in a release Monday that the police have “intensified their effort in disrupting and dismantling organised criminal gangs and their activities, and are sending a strong message to criminals that no effort will be spared to deny them freedom of movement and access to illegal weapons to commit their heinous acts”.
Figures from the Statistics Department of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) show that over 60 per cent of the murders committed since the start of the year were committed with guns.
