The Jamaica Association of Public Health Inspectors says it supports the Government’s decision to retain the temporary ban on corned beef from Brazil in light of the rotten meat scandal.
The ban was imposed on Monday.
Yesterday, the Brazilian Embassy in Kingston reported that none of the 21 companies implicated in the rotten meat probe has exported to Jamaica in the last 60 days.
Noting that companies that export to Jamaica have been complying with all licensing and health regulations, the embassy said Jamaica should consider reviewing the ban.
However, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Michael Myles, says the group believes the restrictions should remain in the interest of protecting public health and safety in the island.
Myles says the association is urging consumers and public health inspectors to be more vigilant.
The Commerce Ministry has said it will not raise the ban until a technical team visits Brazil next week and completes its investigation.
Brazil supplies 99.5 per cent of the corned beef on the local market.
