Third Cellphone Service Provider Coming To Jamaica

The Government has issued a third licence for the provision of cellular phone service in Jamaica. It was revealed Tuesday that Cabinet has approved the licence.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw, who confirmed the granting of the licence, did not name the entity.

“They were given provisional approval and (have) in fact commenced a new service for over two years now and the license has now been approved,” the Minister said.

He said the provider will be offering “basic telephone cellular services.”

He was responding to questions posed by Member of the Parliament for St. Andrew South Eastern, Julian Robinson at Tuesday’s sitting of the Standing Finance Committee which is reviewing the 2016/2017 Estimates of  Expenditure.

Currently, there are two entities licensed to provide cellular phone service in Jamaica.
