Belize cops say burnt plane used to carry illegal drugs

BELMOPAN, Belize (CMC) — Belize Police Wednesday said a small plane found near Spanish Lookout in north-western section of the country on Tuesday was used to transport illegal drugs.

Initial reports had indicated that the six-seater Cessna aircraft had crash-landed, but police said their investigations to date indicate that the plane had been used to transport illegal drugs.

The authorities are also working on the theory that the plane had been deliberately set on fire to conceal evidence.

The remains of the plane were located by authorities on a feeder road in an area north of Spanish Lookout near the Aguacate Lagoon, not far from the Belize-Guatemala border.

The Belize Civil Aviation Department said it had also launched an investigation into the matter and is assisting with the ongoing investigation of the illegal aircraft landing in the Spanish Lookout area.

The authorities said that they could not say where the plane had originated or where it was heading.
