Canadian man charged for ‘plotting murder of couple living in Jamaica’

A Canadian man who reportedly travelled to Jamaica earlier this year to plan the murder of a couple on the island has been arrested, police in Canada have revealed.

The accused, 56-year-old Fitz Hutchinson of Ajax, Ontario, has been charged with conspiracy to murder and counselling offence that is not committed. He remains in police custody, pending a bail hearing.

It is alleged that in May of this year, the Durham police were made aware of a probe into an alleged plot to murder two people in Jamaica.

Police were then able to confirm that a Canadian citizen travelled to Jamaica in mid-May to help plan the murder – which was never actually carried out, media reports in Canada indicated. The allegedly targeted couple remains unharmed.

According to Canadian media reports, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) worked in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Unit (MOCA) in Jamaica to carry out investigations.

Following the completion of the probe on Tuesday, Hutchinson was arrested at about 7 am as he drove on Highway 401 in the Brock Road area of Pickering in Canada. He was later charged.
