Commerce minister wants to remove ban on importation of damaged vehicles

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The government is expected to remove the ban on the importation of damaged motor vehicles shortly.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Anthony Hylton, sounded very optimistic today (Wednesday, May 21) as he informed the House of Representatives that he will shortly be recommending to Cabinet the removal of the ban.

Hylton said that a multi-agency task force will review and make a recommendation for the way forward

He added that the task force will look at regulations, standards, training and certification; and paramount in their deliberation will be the safety and protection of consumers.

“We have heard calls for a restoration of the damaged vehicle trade. We hold the position that the trade and recondition of damaged vehicles is a real opportunity for the expansion of the local automotive industry,” Hylton said.

“It means real opportunity for training and jobs for our mechanics, tradesmen in auto body repairs, auto electricians and other workers in the automotive sector. Accordingly I will shortly be recommending to Cabinet the removal of the ban,” said the commerce minister.
