WASHINGTON DC — Jamaicans in Washington, DC, will be able to pay their respects to the late former Governor Sir Howard Cooke, by signing the condolence book that was opened at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, on July 23.
The book will remain open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, each day until August 1. Sir Howard, who died on July 11 at the age of 98, will be given a State Funeral on August 8, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston at 10:00 am Interment follows in National Heroes Park.
Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Stephen Vasciannie, who signed the book on July 23, said Sir Howard was a hero for many Jamaicans from all walks of life.
“Sir Howard distinguished himself as a teacher, an intellectual, a moral guide, and above all, as a political leader of class,” said Vasciannie.
The Ambassador noted that in the capacities of Government Minister, President of the Senate, and Governor-General, Sir Howard made a magnificent contribution to the public life of Jamaica throughout the entire post-Independence period.
“And yet, it is in his position as a caring, humane and gentle philanthropist that most Jamaicans will remember the man who became Sir Howard. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
On August 5, Sir Howard’s body will lie in state at the Cultural Centre, Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, and on Thursday, August 7, at Mico University College in Kingston, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm both days.
Thursday, August 7 and Friday, August 8 will be observed as the official period of mourning, during which flags on all public buildings are to be flown at half-mast.
