Election recount completed in 62 constituencies, Fisher says

Director of Elections Orette Fisher

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Electoral Office of Jamaica has announced that it completed the recount of votes in 62 of 63 constituencies contested in the General Election on Thursday February 25.

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher said the counting of ballots for the remaining constituency, St Thomas Western, was moved to the EOJ’s head office and is currently underway.

He noted that 55 of the 156 ballot boxes for the constituency have been completed.

Based on the count thus far, 32 seats have been won by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and 31 by the People’s National Party, the director said.

Preliminary results had declared 33 seats for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and 30 for the People’s National Party (PNP). However, after recounting started, the PNP was awarded the additional seat of St Mary South East due to a “transposition error” where one candidate was given the votes intended for another candidate, Fisher said.

The director added that his office is expected to advise the Governor General of the final results by Wednesday.

The EOJ gave the update from its head office on Red Hills Road in St Andrew a short while ago.
