A Jamaican man was sentenced to five years in a US prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl
although his victim had asked for a shorter sentence.
Homer Bishop,41, apologised at his hearing in Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey on Friday.
Bishop was charged nearly a decade ago with sexually assaulting the girl on at least five occasions.
He pleaded guilty in 2007 to one count of aggravated sexual assault and agreed to serve a five-year prison term.
But before he was sentenced, he fled to Jamaica and remained a fugitive until he was arrested and extradited in February.
The girl, whose name is being withheld, spoke briefly in court, telling the judge she did not want Bishop to receive a lengthy sentence. She said she wanted his children to grow up with a father.
Bishop must serve more than four years before he is eligible for parole.
