KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) sources on Monday denied reports appearing in other sections of the media, suggesting that the party had called an emergency meeting to discuss the future of its leader, Andrew Holness.
Robert Morgan, spokesman for the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, told OBSERVER ONLINE this afternoon that a meeting held at the JLP’s Belmont Road headquarters, this morning, was scheduled days ago to facilitate the establishment of the Council of Elders.
The new council was announced during the recent shadow cabinet reshuffle. It is to be chaired by former spokesman on health, Dr Kenneth Baugh, who is retiring from active politics.
“It was the first meeting of the council, and they had scheduled that meeting well in advance of these events,” Morgan said.
He also explained that a weekly meeting of the party’s shadow cabinet followed at 1:00 pm and lasted up to approximately 5:00 pm.
According to Morgan, the issues related to the court ruling on Friday against Holness, regarding the letters signed by Opposition senators, would be discussed when the party’s Standing Committee has its weekly meeting this evening, starting at approximately 6 o’clock.
Morgan said that the party would issue a press release after the Standing Committee meeting at Belmont Road.
