KINGSTON, Jamaica — Residents of West Kingston are heaping praises on the police for their recent efforts to host an entertainment event in the violence prone division.

The event dubbed ‘Police/Citizens Link Up’ was held on Friday at the Denham Town Police station.

“The event was one of the first of its kind in the Division and was aimed at building the relationship between the two groups,” said Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor.

On Friday international sprint star, Usain Bolt and West Indies batsman, Marlon Samuels were among thousands of Jamaicans, who flooded the grounds of the police station for the event.

“This is one of the best events I have seen held in the area,” said Denham Town resident Marcia Brown.

“Is true because of this event many people who were afraid to venture to some parts of the community were able to do so people who have not seen each other for years were able to meet up and we welcome the move,” agreed Sheldon Whyte, a resident from Tivoli Gardens who joined the massive crowd.

“All now I still trying to recover still can’t believe the large turnout of people that came out to the event, which is one of the best things  to take place  in the area for a long time,” said Sharon Willis, another Tivoli Gardens resident.

McGregor said funds raised from the event will be used to host a number of events for children during the Christmas holidays and also to treat the elderly and shut-ins in and around the Division.

“We believe that if the crime is to stop in the Division community policing is one of the best way forward and the method we will continue to use is to build relationships between citizens and the police,” said McGregor.
