New East-West toll rates take effect today

New toll rates become effective on Saturday on the East-West corridor of Highway 2000.

This followed a failed last-minute effort by Transport Minister Mike Henry to broker a deal with the toll operator to reduce the planned levels of increase.

In respect of the failed effort, Henry said a part of the problem was the less than desirable volume of public comment on the planned adjustments to the toll rates.

The new rates relate to the Portmore, Vineyards, Spanish Town and May Pen legs of the highway.

At the Portmore toll plaza, operators of  class one vehicles will now pay $200, up from $180; for the Vineyards, they will pay $400; for Spanish Town, they will pay $140; and $100 is the new rate for May Pen.

For class two vehicles, the Portmore leg will now cost $320; for the Vineyards leg, $580; for the Spanish Town leg, $220; and $160 for the May Pen leg.

For class three vehicles, the costs will be $610 on the Portmore leg; $1,100 on the Vineyards leg; $400 on the Spanish Town leg; and $320 on the May Pen leg.
