Opposition Parliamentarians emerged from a special meeting at the headquarters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) declaring support for leader Andrew Holness and giving him a clear hand to resolve issues arising from Friday’s Constitutional Court ruling.
The four hour meeting took place amid reports that Holness is under pressure to resign after the court ruled that he acted unlawfully when he used a pre-signed letter to remove Arthur Williams and Dr. Christopher Tufton from the Senate.
Williams is planning to retake his seat in the Upper House this Friday although some senior officials of the JLP are of the view that the composition of the Senate has not changed.
“There is no significant question about who should lead the party at this point in time. But this is a matter that we discussed but it’s not a serious dispute about the leadership of the party,” said JLP General Secretary, Dr. Horace Chang.
He is also confident that issues concerning the status of Williams and Tufton will be settled within days.
