PSOJ president weighs in on economic impact of Obama’s visit on New Kingston

President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica William Mahfood

KINGSTON, Jamaica – President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica William Mahfood says if the visit of United States President Barrack Obama

has tangible economic impact, then businesses in New Kingston, which are forced to close for the day or limit opening hours, would be making a small sacrifice.

“If President Obama comes here and we require, as a country, a sustainable economic stimulus package, whether it be some sort of debt forgiveness, which would help our investment climate, (and) give us some breathing room in terms of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) austerity measures, then the small sacrifice we would have made as a country, to close a couple of businesses would really be, from a practical standpoint, a small price to pay for that,” Mahfood told the OBSERVER ONLINE a short while ago.

“If, on the other hand, he comes here and takes some pictures, and he says a lot of nice things but at the end of it we don’t see something that is really meaningful or tangible – such as some debt forgiveness from multilaterals, or a stimulus package, then it would have been a large sacrifice,” he said.
