Rain! Rain! At last

KINGSTON, Jamaica — After months without a drop of rain in the Corporate Area, forcing severe water shortage and restrictions, play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 cricket match at Sabina Park, Kingston was interrupted Thursday because rain.

Heavy showers have also been reported in sections of Portmore while in Spanish Town and environs in St Catherine thunderstorms have been reported.

Whether or not today’s showers signal the end of the prolonged and widespread drought is left to be seen. But the long held notion that scheduling an international cricket match at Sabina Park is sure to bring rain again appears to hold true.

The Meteorological (Met) Service of Jamaica Wednesday afternoon forecast a break in the current drought in the Corporate Area and other areas across the island.

According to the Met Service, showers were expected Thursday afternoon in Kingston; a thunderstorm was expected for Spanish Town, St Catherine as well as Santa Cruz and Black River in St Elizabeth, Mandeville, Savannah-La-Mar, Montego Bay and Lucea in Hanover.

The Met Service says the trough is expected to remain across the region until Saturday.
