KINGSTON, Jamaica–The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has reported that coordinated activities of the National Response Team have resulted in moderate improvements in bringing the fire at the Riverton City Disposal site under control.
Currently the fire has been contained and the smoke nuisance significantly reduced, ODPEM said in an advisory Monday morning.
In addition ODPEM and the Ministry of Education have deemed it safe for schools in the affected environs to open their doors for normal operations today, Monday March 17, 2014.
Similarly, with reduced levels of toxicity, businesses within the geographic locale, can resume operations on Monday as scheduled, ODPEM advised.
An early morning fire at the landfill Sunday blanketed sections of Kingston in thick, heavy smoke.
