Sangster Airport closed, flights diverted to NMIA

ST JAMES, Jamaica — The runway at the Sangster International Airport in St James is currently closed and all flights are being diverted to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

Passengers were today evacuated from Delta flight 304 at the Montego Bay airport after smoke was seen coming from a section of the aircraft.

The flight, which was scheduled for departure to the United States, came to a halt about 3:30 pm after the pilot reportedly observed the smoke.

It was later discovered that there was a fire in the cargo section which damaged luggage.

One Hundred and sixty passengers and six crew members on-board were evacuated and the fire extinguished.

The police this afternoon confirmed that no one was injured.

The MBJ Airports Limited is urging the travelling public to contact their respective airline directly regarding flight operations.
