Scam Alert: Police warn of overseas farm work scammers

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police are advising the public to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who have been soliciting payment from people in return for an opportunity to be selected for the overseas farm work programme to the UK, USA and Canada.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID) have received information that people posing as ministry officials have been soliciting unsuspecting members of the public by means of text messages and telephone calls.

The ministry states that it has already completed the 4,250 forms it distributed and the deadline for this programme ended on June 16. The legitimate forms that were issued have all been returned to the ministry and interviews are currently being carried out for those applicants.

The police advise that the application forms are free and not for sale. They have a unique serial number and other security features and anyone found duplicating these forms will be arrested for fraud.

Members of the public are being advised that anyone who approaches them soliciting payment for these services should be immediately reported to OCID at 922-3771 or 926-1389, police 119 emergency number, 311, 811 or the nearest police station.
