SE Clarendon By-Election: West Kingston resident becomes billboard

Phillip Sawyers, a long-time supporter of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, on Monday showed his love for the party by becoming a billboard.

During Monday’s by-election in South East Clarendon, Sawyers trodded the streets for most of the day with pictures of JLP leaders and prominent figures within the organisation.

Whether famous or infamous, Sawyers had them, but also pictures of National Heroes and former leader of the Opposition People’s National Party, Michael Manley.

Among those in Sawyers’ catalogue were JLP founder Sir Alexander Bustamante, Edward Seaga, Marcus Garvey and Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

But he did not stop there. Former Tivoli Gardens strongman, Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke was also on display, along with a photo of another Tivoli ‘don’, Claudius Massop, with alleged People’s National Party strongman Bucky Marshall.

According to Sawyers, he has lived in the strong JLP enclave of West Kingston since moving there from Claremont, St Ann in 1979.

He said the billboard helps him earn a living as he sells them at major events, especially those with political undertones.
