A senior police man linked to several major case investigations in St Andrew has been charged for corruption.
The policeman identified as Detective Sergeant, Dewayne Jonas of the St. Andrew Central Police Division was charged with soliciting over $250,000 and accepting over $100,000 in order to dispose of a case where a man was charged for illegal possession of firearm, Loop News understands.
Allegations are that between December 2011 and June 2012, Detective Sergeant Jonas solicited over Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($250,000.00) and accepted over One Hundred Thousand Dollars (100,000.00) in order to dispose of a case involving the complainant.
In 2011, the complainant was charged by Jonas for Robbery with Aggravation and Illegal Possession of Firearm. Following this Jonas through a third party solicited the money.
A report was made to the then Anti-Corruption Branch, subsequent to an investigation a file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution resulting in this Jonas being charged for breaches of the Corruption Preventions Act.
He was offered bail when he appeared in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court of corruption charges in the sum of Four Hundred Thousand Dollars ($400,000.00) and will return to court on Monday July 31, 2017.
