Trauma counselling team dispatched to St Elizabeth school after teacher allegedly commits suicide

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites

A trauma counselling team is being dispatched to the St Elizabeth Technical High School following the suspected suicide committed yesterday by a teacher of the institution.

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says the trauma counselling team will arrive tomorrow to provide support for members of the bereaved family and school community in the aftermath of the tragic incident.

The 38-year-old math and social studies teacher, Diane Vasell, was found hanging in the bathroom of her home in Malvern, St Elizabeth yesterday.
Thwaites says her death is a deep loss to the education sector, as she was a multi-skilled educator.

He is being supported by permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education, Elaine Foster-Allen. In a statement this afternoon, she said the education ministry is saddened that Vassell had “reached the unfortunate point where she took her own life”.

She says the education ministry mourns with her family, students and colleagues.
