Calabar student stabbed to death while heading home from New Year’s Eve party

A 17-year-old student of Calabar High School was stabbed to death on Hagley Park Road in St Andrew on New Year’s morning, during a reported attempted robbery.

The youngster, a member of the school’s cricket team, has been identified as Stephen McLaren.

Indications were that he was walking with a friend along Hagley Park Road after leaving a party around 6:00 am, when he was reportedly pounced upon by a group of men while urinating. He ended up being stabbed a number of times.

McLaren was taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where he was pronounced dead.

The school community is in mourning over the loss of the very talented youngster, who was a sixth former and an effective all-rounder on the institution’s cricket team.

The Half-Way Tree police are investigating the death, which seems to have been confused with the almost simultaneous fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old, so far unidentified boy, on Constant Spring Road, also in St Andrew. Both youngsters reportedly died during robberies on their way home from New Year’s Eve parties.
