THE policeman charged in connection with the death of Vince Walcott, whose burnt remains were found on Rousseau Road in Kingston last year, is now before the court.
The accused, Junior Hayles, who was assigned to the Kingston East Division, was jointly charged with 34-year-old Nicola Montague, a beauty therapist of Daytona in Portmore, St Catherine, with conspiracy to murder, following a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
According to a Denham Town police report, about 7:30 pm on July 1, 2018, residents observed tyres burning behind a church and summoned the Jamaica Fire Brigade.
The report said firemen discovered the burnt remains during cooling down operations and alerted the police.
Post-mortem examinations revealed that the man died from a gunshot wound to the head, the report continued.
Following intensive investigation by detectives from the Kingston West Division, the police said DNA confirmed the identity of the dead man as Vince Walcott, otherwise called “Steven Chambers”, of Mount Royal Estate, Bridgeport, St Catherine. He was 33 years old.
“The case file, which included a range of forensic evidence, was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for a ruling.
The DPP subsequently ruled that both Montague and Hayles be charged, the report said.
When the matter was mentioned last Friday in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court, the prosecutor told the court that Hayles was on bail for a similar charge.
The court was told that the cop is to return to the Home Circuit Court on May 13 in relation to that matter.
A May 15, date was subsequently set for him to reappear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
