Four Storey Buildings Now Allowed In Negril

Environment Minister Robert Pickersgill says buildings being constructed in Negril, Westmoreland can now be up to four storeys high as an adjustment has been made to the Negril Development Order to allow for the maximum height.

The Order is among four provisional orders announced by Pickersgill last year. The other three were for Portland, Trelawny and Manchester.

He said other Development Orders are on stream to be published this financial year.

The Government is said to be on target to have the entire island regulated by Development Orders under the Town and Country Planning Act by the end of  the 2016/2017 financial year.

Approval process

Meanwhile, improvements are to be made to the development approval process.

Following complaints by stakeholders, discussions were held with representatives from the public and private sectors to review the procedure.

The Environment and Local Government Ministries made recommendations which were approved by Cabinet last December.

Pickersgill says a draft implementation plan, which includes time-lines, has been completed, and is being finalised for Cabinet approval.
