More Than 300 Arrested Since January For Electricity Theft

In a major push to crack down on electricity theft, the Jamaica Public Service, JPS, is reporting that more than 300 persons have been arrested since January.

In a release today, JPS said it carried out operations in collaboration with the security forces and 304 persons were arrested for the illegal abstraction of  electricity. JPS crews also removed 9,512 throw-up lines. Last Tuesday, JPS teams carried out an operation in Windsor Heights, St. Catherine and removed 850 throw-up lines. A man was arrested.

In the meantime, the JPS is reporting that several persons have been found guilty of electricity theft over the past two months and given heavy court fines.Last month, nine persons were taken before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court, for illegal abstraction of  electricity. Six pleaded guilty and were fined an average of  $150,000 each or six months in prison.

On July 1, five other persons faced the Linstead Resident Magistrate’s Court, for the same charge. Four pleaded guilty and were also fined an average $150,000 each.
