NYS warns of phone credit scam

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Youth Service (NYS) is urging the public to be on alert for unscrupulous people claiming to be NYS staff, who are requesting phone credit on behalf of the organization.

Director of Community Services, NYS, Omar Newell, said that individuals claiming to be staff of the service have been contacting people requesting phone credit and additional resources.

He said the incidents have been occurring in several parishes especially Hanover, Trelawny, St James and St Thomas.

Newell said that the NYS would under no circumstance, request phone credit from members of the public, and urged anyone approached with such a request to report the incident to the police.

“If someone calls you claiming to be affiliated to NYS requesting phone cards or anything else, please contact the police or give us a call at 754-9816 -8,” he said.

The NYS, an agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture, is currently engaging hundreds of young people, who will benefit from work experience during the months of July and August, under the NYS summer programme.
