The Agriculture Ministry says growth in the agricultural sector last year caused Jamaica’s food import bill to be reduced by some US$6 million.
The disclosure was made by Director of Planning and Policy in the Agriculture Ministry, Shaun Baugh at the Hague Agricultural Show in Trelawny yesterday.
Baugh said the reduction in the food import bill was observed last October.
There was also a US$2.4 million reduction in Jamaica’s food import bill for the January to May period last year.
According to the latest report from the Planning Institute of Jamaica, the October to December performance of the economy was driven by the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing industry which grew by 16 per cent.
